Not All Meditation Is the Same

A practical guide for beginning LKM practice:
Start with yourself. Many people find this the most difficult step — the inner critic that immediately undermines the self-directed phrases is a diagnostic of exactly the self-compassion deficit that the practice is designed to address. Persist. The difficulty is the indication of need.
Say, either silently or quietly aloud: "May I be happy. May I be healthy. May I be safe. May I live with ease." Try to actually feel the meaning behind the words — not to perform the words while thinking about something else. If you find yourself resistant or emotionally flat with the self-directed phrases, simply notice that. Don't force the feeling. Just stay with the intention.
After five minutes with yourself, bring to mind a loved one — someone for whom warmth and goodwill arise easily. Visualize them clearly. "May you be happy. May you be healthy. May you be safe. May you live with ease." Feel the goodwill. Hold it.
After five minutes, move to a neutral person — someone you see regularly but don't have particular warmth or coldness toward. The checkout person at a store you frequent. A neighbor you wave to but don't know. Extend the same goodwill. Notice how it's harder to generate than with the loved one. The difficulty is the point — you're training the circuit.
Then a difficult person. Not the most difficult person in your life if you're beginning — start with someone mildly difficult. Extend goodwill. Expect resistance. Stay with the intention even when the feeling doesn't follow immediately. Over time, with practice, the feeling follows the intention more reliably.
Category 4: Body Scan Meditation
What it is: The practitioner systematically moves their attention through the body, sequentially attending to each region with curious, non-judgmental awareness. Typically beginning at the feet and moving toward the crown, or in some traditions, moving in the opposite direction. The attention may spend twenty to sixty seconds with each region, simply noticing whatever is present — sensation, tension, warmth, numbness, tingling — without trying to change it.
What it trains: The body scan specifically develops interoceptive awareness — the capacity to perceive and accurately interpret one's own bodily states. This is a critical and undervalued capacity for high performers, because interoceptive awareness is the biological substrate of emotional intelligence: the ability to recognize your own emotional states (which are embodied experiences — cortisol elevation, tension in the jaw, constriction in the chest, heat in the face) is foundational to being able to regulate them.
